A carrier announcement is a useful moment to evaluate the provider managing your shipping spend. Ask whether your 3PL can show what changes for your products, rather than forwarding a notice and adding a percentage to next year's budget.
FedEx announced a 5.9% average increase in standard package list rates for U.S., U.S. export and U.S. import services, effective January 4, 2027. That is an average across rates, not a promise about an individual account's total bill. FedEx rate-change announcement.
Ask for a reproducible comparison
Our recommended selection exercise starts with one fixed shipment file. Include service, origin and destination, billed weight, package dimensions, residential status and shipment date. Ask the incumbent and each finalist to return a matched row for every shipment, including any case they cannot price.
Require separate columns for transportation, fuel, other carrier charges and warehouse work. Keep the same orders in both years. Otherwise, a change in the proposed order mix can look like a pricing improvement.
Choose a sample that includes ordinary parcels and expensive exceptions. A simple convenience sample of the smallest boxes can tell you very little about a furniture accessory or a remote residential delivery. Describe the sample's limitations before using it to approve a budget.
A weighted example changes the decision
Consider an invented month with 800 routine parcels and 200 exception parcels. Suppose complete modeled transportation costs rise from $10 to $10.50 for routine parcels and from $25 to $29 for exceptions. These are hypothetical inputs, not FedEx rates.
| Segment | Orders | Before | After | Increase |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Routine | 800 | $8,000 | $8,400 | $400 |
| Exceptions | 200 | $5,000 | $5,800 | $800 |
| Total | 1,000 | $13,000 | $14,200 | $1,200 |
The modeled increase is 9.23%. One fifth of the parcels creates two thirds of the added expense. The operational question is now specific: can the provider reduce the cost or frequency of that exception group without damaging the delivery promise?
This example does not estimate the FedEx increase. It shows why you should weight a comparison by your own shipments and inspect the drivers.
Grade the explanation as well as the price
Give finalists four deliverables: a matched shipment file, a list of assumptions, a list of unpriced orders and one operational recommendation tied to the largest exposure. A blank rate should remain unpriced, not become zero.
A useful answer might identify a packaging review, a different service for a qualifying lane or an account-term question. A recommendation to move everything to a cheaper carrier needs evidence that the alternative accepts those products and meets the required service.
For every proposed change, ask who owns implementation, how exceptions will be handled and what would cause you to reverse it. A low modeled cost with no operational owner is an unfinished proposal.
Make the renewal decision on evidence
Our editorial recommendation is to make transparent repricing part of the renewal discussion. Prefer a provider that exposes uncertainty and can reproduce its calculation. Do not select a winner solely from a list-rate announcement or a claimed discount.
Use the comparison to negotiate the next action: a narrow packaging test, a limited lane trial or a documented correction to the budget. The decision should become more specific as the evidence improves.
Keep the 2027 dates separate
The announced rollout spans January 4 rate and fee changes, January 18 paper fees and February 1 changes to selected domestic ZIP-pair zones. FedEx announcement. Give the repricing exercise a shipment date, rather than a single generic “2027” setting.
Fuel follows its own weekly adjustment process. FedEx fuel rules. Ask for a fuel sensitivity range, not a purportedly fixed full-year rate. A carrier's geographic footprint also does not establish whether the particular service, pickup or delivery promise your brand needs is available.
